Help me to find a sleeping beauty

I'M trying to find a Hyder Tokyo bed frame in oak with a wenge finish in either double or king-size, but it's been discontinued. Could track one down for me? - Nick Ellarby, Beverley, East Yorkshire

ZENA SAYS: I spoke to the man from Hyder who knows all about this bed and, unfortunately, he says there is no stock of any sizes available. He says the 6ft beds selling on eBay are the only ones left in the country. It really is a case of scouring local adverts and trading websites. The closest Hyder could suggest is the faux leather Milan, which offers a similar low base/high headboard with the bonus of a lift-up base for storage. Priced at pounds 330, it is available from Hyder Living (01484 531000).

Tips on Choosing the Right Platform Bed Plans

You have made the decision to build you own platform bed, and I think that is an excellent choice to make. Since I have had the opportunity to experience the ups and downs of building these types of beds, I hope that I can share some of my knowledge with you and help you avoid some of the pitfalls that I encountered when building my first bed.

In essence, the platform bed can be what you want it to be. The style that you build will be based on your decision. You must ask yourself several questions. Who is this bed for? Do I want to add extras and upgrades? How much time do I have to devote to the project? Once you have made these decisions, you will be able to choose the platform bed plans to match. For those who like a little something extra, there are many add-ons or upgrades that you may want to include. The key to creating these would be to choose and buy the right platform bed plans for the project. If you are building the bed for a little girl, then you may want to consider adding a canopy. Alternatively, if the project is for a student or a college bound young adult, you may want to add storage drawers underneath.I built a fabulous platform bed for my son using a great set of high quality premium Platform Bed Plans. Feel free to check out my useful tips and advice for choosing woodworking plans at http://platformbedplansinfo.comSome people choose this type of bed for its low cost, while others like the idea of added storage underneath. In addition, these types of beds are often preferred by people who suffer from back pain since they provide a firm sleeping base. Some people choose to stick with the most basic. This would be the bed frame and a mattress with no frills or extras. If all you are looking for is functionality, this could be a very good choice for you. This type of bed will include simple plans and will only require the very basic in building. If you are inexperienced at building things, this one could be an excellent choice.I would like to mention now some information on the types of beds that you can choose from. Once you have chosen the type that you like, you will then be able to seek out the right pattern and instructions so that you can get started building. If you like the idea of the platform bed, yet you want a more traditional look, you can choose to buy plans that include a head and footboard. While this type of bed will take longer to build and will require more experience, the end result will provide a more traditional style bed for those who prefer it.

Ways to Protect Your Child from Bunk Bed Accidents and Injury At Home

Bunk beds are frequently used as a child's first regular bed after the child outgrows a crib. Some bunk beds also are used separately as twin beds for older children and even adults. Every year, thousands of children receive treatment for injuries associated with bunk beds. Most of these injuries are fairly minor and occur when children fall from the beds. But there are other less obvious yet potentially very serious hazards associated with bunk bed structures that have entrapped children and resulted in suffocation or deaths.

4. Use of the Bed without Rails on Both SidesTeach children that rough play is unsafe around and on beds and other furniture. Emphasize to children to use the ladder and not chairs or other pieces of furniture to climb into or out of the top bunk.3. Using the Wrong Size Mattress Can Cause Injury or Even Death5. Playing Around Bed Furniture Frequently Contributes To Accidents. To help avoid bunk bed collapse, inspect all mattress support fin tabs and pockets for breaks or cracks in the metal and welds. The fin tabs are inserted into pockets located near each of the bed's eight corners. Stop using damaged beds as bunks and contact the manufacturer or importer for repair or replacement.Death or injury may occur if a very young child rolls off the bed and becomes entrapped between the wall and the side of the bed not having a guardrail. This hazard is not unique to bunk beds. Regular beds can present the same hazard. Always use two side guardrails on the upper bunk. Keep guardrails securely in place at all times no matter what the age of the child. Children move about during sleep and may roll out of bed.Mattresses or foundations resting only on ledges need cross wires, or other means of support to help prevent dislodgement, even when beds are not stacked. Securely fasten supports to ledges of both beds with screws or bolts. Supports can be provided by wood slats, metal straps or sturdy wires. Be sure crossties are under the mattress foundation of each bed and that they are secured in place even if bunks are used as twin beds. Fasten additional cross ties underneath the mattress foundation of both beds.1. Head Entrapment under Bunk Bed Guard Rails.Strangulation deaths can occur if a child falls through an opening created between the mattress and headboard or footboard when a regular length mattress is used in an extra long bed frame. Choose a mattress that correctly fits your bed.6. Metal Bunk Beds2. Falling Mattresses or Foundations Can Cause Injury or Even Kill A Small Child.

To help avoid bunk bed collapse, inspect all mattress support fin tabs and pockets for breaks or cracks in the metal and welds. How to Choose a Log Bunk Bed

So youve got the perfect little log cabin, or chalet by the lake, or just want a country touch to your home. You want a log bunk bed, or two, but dont know where to start. And they dont carry them in your downtown furniture store.

Make sure the ladder in well constructed and is firmly attached and bolted to the bed frame. Test it out with your own weight - if it moves around it is not safe.Ask the retailer if it meets the voluntary safety guidelines of the American Standards of Testing and Materials and the minimum safety standards of the Consumer Product Safety Commission. If it does, you'll know that the bed meets all current and reasonable safety standards.Repair and maintenanceCopyright 2006 Cari HausThere are federal regulations regarding bunk beds, so youll want to make sure that whatever bed you choose meets the regulations. Were talking safety here, and things do happen. But you certainly wouldnt want a bed that doesnt meet the regulations, so make sure that the one you buy, does. Most accidents with bunk beds happen to children under the age of three. Many of these accidents can be avoided by having safety rails on both sides of the top bed. If one side of the bed is against the wall, that can be sufficient--but it must be against the wall. There are also regulations regarding headboards. There is a link to a page with the regulations at the bottom of this article for those who wish to read further.Safety rails should run on both sides of the top bunk, and the lower rail should be no higher than 3 1/2 inches above the top of the mattress height - any higher and your children could slip underneath it. Also make sure the top rail is at least 5 inches above the mattress top to prevent your child from rolling over the safety rails.Reputable manufacturerStrong frame construction

Amazing Ways - Using Isopropyl Alcohol For Bed Bugs

Of all the beasties i have had to cope with, Bedbugs have got to be the most sickening. I hate the little blighters! There are several species of Bedbug but this article will deal with the Common Bedbug ( Cimex lectularius ), as it's the most plentiful, being found in most temperate climates around the world.

The Common Bedbug feeds off human blood and doesn't discriminate between blood groups. The adult has a flat reddish-brown oval body and measures roughly 4-5mm in length. During feeding, their abdomen fills up with blood and expands leaving the bug resembling an apple seed with legs.Ensure proper mattress fitSome log bunk beds come with a metal frame to hold the mattress, but some of the Amish build them with a wood frame to hold both the box spring and the mattress. You dont have to put a box spring in those beds, but you certainly can.Strangulation deaths have occurred in the US when children fall through openings between the mattress and the frame during the night. Make sure the mattress opening snugly fits the mattress without a lot adjustment room. If the mattress has a gap greater than 3 inches from any side of the mattress to the bed frame, headboard or footboard - it does not fit properly.Examine and test the durability and strength of the bunk bed frame. It should easily hold a parents weight - climb on it and wiggle the frame a bit. A good bunk bed with remain firmly grounded without movement or noise.

So what about the pros ' should you just take the simple route and pay for them to solve your problem? Well if you do, they will come along and tell you to strip the bed so they can start using isopropyl alcohol for bed bugs to the mattress and bed frame / divan base. If they're intensive and know their business, they should also look for possible harbourage across the room and treat these areas too. You are still going to need to deal with sanitizing your bedding, so you must weigh up whether you would like to pay for the spray or the cost of a steam cleaner.

Bunk Bed Shopping - 10 Point Safety Checklist To Protect Your Children

Every year thousands of children are admitted to hospital emergency rooms due to incidents involving bunk beds involving improper use, manufacturing, or set up. If your follow our 10 point safety checklist, bunk beds can still be a great bedding solution for your children:

Sturdy ladder constructionIf you follow these basic tips then you should get years of safe enjoyment out of your new bunk bed. For more bunk bed resources and tips you can visit http://www.loft-beds-bunk-beds.com/bunk-beds.htmTeach your children not to push up on the underside of the bed, or to climb on it like a jungle gym. Proper safety is important at all times, and you may wish to also use a night light near the ladder so children can see the ladder steps in the dark.Bedbugs are even less widespread than they used to be but have been making a little bit of a comeback recently. While big infestations may still happen, it is more customary to cope with infestations of tiny numbers of bugs. Bedbugs can enter the home via used beds, sofas and curtains and can even be transferred in luggage after visiting hotels, guesthouses, and so on.Remove all bedding and clean up it by washing on a hot wash ( fifty Centigrade or 120 Fahrenheit ). You can deal with the mattress with a portable steam cleaner that are to be had from many retailers. If you have got a divan bed, be certain to go over the base completely with the steamer. A stiff brush is handy for dislodging any eggs and shed skins from seams. If you can dismantle your bed frame, do so, as this can show up any hiding bugs. So use this as an excuse to carry out a severe spring-cleaning of your room. Seal any cracks and holes in the fabric of the room with an acceptable sealant - a caulking gun and silicon gel is good for this reason.Measure the safety railsA lot of injuries are caused by children in the lower bunks pushing up on the underside of the top bunk and dislodging the mattress or support frame. Ensure the top bunk has sturdy mattress supports that are secured to the bed frame with bolts or screws. You don't want a floating board support system, as these will move around and can possibly fall through the opening. Not to worry, there are plenty of options available on the Internet. There are loft log bunk beds, twin over twin log bunk beds, full over full or even twin over queen. I havent seen a twin over king yet, but really the Amish can make any size you want. A lot of college students who looking to build an inexpensive loft bed might find an Amish loft bunk bed to be just the ticket, and some of them come with futons under them, too.Check the entire bed construction for smoothness of materials and fasteners. There should be no sharp edges or protruding points anywhere in the construction.Sturdy mattress supportOnly rounded edgesIf you get a pine bunk bed with metal frame, there is a way to give the metal frame that log look when the covers are thrown back. These are decorative half logs or rails, not to be confused with the safety rails that go around the top of the bunk bed. The top safety rails are always included with the log bunk bed, but the decorative half rails are optional and just for looks.Bunk beds built to those regulations are generally built to hold an adult weighing up to 250 pounds. If you are pushing the limits, try cedar instead of pine. In the beds we sell, the cedar logs are 5 to 6 inches in diameter, while the pine is about 3 inches in diameter. They are both built to federal specifications, and the pine bunk beds are very solid and strong, but if there is a question in your mind, go for the bigger logs. And of course, you can always put the big fella on the bottom, too.The other alternative to hold the mattress up is called a Bunkie board. A Bunkie board is basically inch plywood cut to the size of the box spring. It sits inside either the metal bed frame, or the wood bed frame, and supports the mattress. If you have a box spring you dont need a Bunkie board, but if there is not a box spring, the Bunkie board is what supports the middle of the mattress. We sell Bunkie boards if people want them, but a lot of people just cut their own. Its up to the buyer.Safe useASTM and CPSC guidelinesImmediately replace or repair any loose or missing fasteners on the bed. Periodically check the tightness of fasteners holding the bed together, as well as the cross support rails holding the upper mattress. In contrast to popular misconception, the cleanliness of your house has no impact on whether or not you are in peril from a Bedbug infestation. Should Bedbugs find their way into your residence, they will look for shelter often in the stitching of mattresses, settees and curtains. Openings behind wallpaper and skirting boards could also harbor bugs. Regular vacuuming of these locations can remove the tiny suckers. An inexpensive anti-bug barrier can be built by wrapping double-sided sticky tape around each leg of the bed.Another option to consider is the type of ladder you want with your log bunk bed. Some of the Amish beds have the ladders built right into the end of the bed, so you dont have a ladder leaning out from the bed. Others have a moveable ladder that can hook on the end or the side. In many cases, the amount of space available determines the type of bunk bed you buy. If you have a small room, the larger cedar logs may seem too massive. If you dont have room for a slanted ladder, however, you may opt for the cedar bunk bed anyway that has the ladder built in. If you have a larger room or larger people, you may opt for the larger cedar logs.So what about the pros ' should you just take the simple route and pay for them to solve your problem? Well if you do, they will come along and tell you to strip the bed so they can start using isopropyl alcohol for bed bugs to the mattress and bed frame / divan base. If they're intensive and know their business, they should also look for possible harbourage across the room and treat these areas too. You are still going to need to deal with sanitizing your bedding, so you must weigh up whether you would like to pay for the spray or the cost of a steam cleaner.

SPACE.. A NEW STYLE FRONTIER

WHEN I moved in to my new home in Brixton, South London, friends joked I'd have to send half my wardrobe to a car boot sale. But I was determined to prove that a small space doesn't have to mean sacrificing on style - or shoes. All I needed was meticulous planning, space-saving furniture and a clever colour scheme...

The direct effects of the recent and potential further credit deterioration in the Greek, Portuguese, and Irish sovereigns and evidence that market concerns are turning ever more to Spain and Italy have reduced investor risk appetite, prejudicing the funding prospects for issuers facing refinancing risk in the near future. The high-yield bond market virtually shut down in June to all but the highest quality speculative-grade borrowers. The role of high-yield bonds remains crucial to the European market's ability to refinance maturing debt due to a lack of alternative sources of new money from the loan market.Strong activity in both the U.S. high yield and leveraged loan markets in April and May gave way to a steep pullback in June, and uncertainties in Europe and disappointing U.S. economic results caused issuers and investors to pause and re-evaluate risk, according to Fitch Ratings' 'U.S. Leveraged Finance Quarterly.'Remember to take accurate measurementsWhite shelves against white walls provided me with a blank canvas to show off my books, pictures and ornaments. Made-to-measure curtains helped open up the space on the window ledge. I chose a gorgeous vintage-style Persian print from KAI which I had custom- made by Curtainsmadesimple.co.uk. The wardrobe doors are sliding panels in shimmery KAI fabric.A bad or inferior mattress that is too soft and not comfortable can lead to a horrible night of sleep, and the next morning it can be even worse. In fact, due to the different kind of designs of different bunk beds, the most important thing is to make sure you choose a superbly comfortable mattress for your child's bunk bed. When you go shopping for a the mattress that will go in your bunk bed, without the frame you'll have to make sure of the size you will need.
